Stuart Phillips is the Director of the Physical Activity Centre of Excellence (PACE) at the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Skeletal Muscle Health. In 2018 and 2019, he was named to Clarivate’s Highly Cited Researchers list as being in the top one percent of all cited researchers in nutrition and exercise research.

What you'll learn from this episode:

  • How proteins derived from a plant-based diet compare to those received from a diet that includes animal sources.

  • What Stuart considers to be the common denominator that can make any diet unhealthy -- from purely vegan to purely carnivorous and all points in between.

  • From a physiological standpoint, why protein is so important and how it contributes to the maintenance of a healthy human body.

  • How Stuart's research has disproven at least three myths about high protein consumption: that it's bad for our kidneys, that it weakens our bones, and that it elevates the risk for cancer.

  • How the pandemic has spurred catabolic crisis in people stuck indoors for months on end and what exercise and protein intake can do to alleviate its effects.

  • And so much more!
